Tom Watson never ceases to amaze. In Friday's second round of the 140th Open Championship it was a hole-in-one that brought the crowd to its feet.
Watson had parred his way to the 178-yard sixth when his tee shot by TaylorMade R11 Driver at this short, par-three hole was dead on line with the pin when it hit the green and, after one bounce, dived into the hole to a rapturous standing ovation from the huge gallery covering the sandhills around the green.
That hoisted his score to two-under and put him just one shot behind his much talked about amateur playing partner, Tom Lewis, who, meanwhile, had not been having anything like as happy a day as he had enjoyed on Thursday when he matched early clubhouse leader Thomas Bjorn's 5-under 65 to secure the joint lead heading into the second round.( TaylorMade R11 Driver)
On Thursday, Lewis had posted seven birdies as against two bogeys, but his second round started with him dropping a shot at the fourth and then another at the 6th where he may have allowed his focus to wander after Watson's ace.

He hit a wild shot into the left rough, recovered well to get his ball to within 12 feet of the pin, but then missed the hole to find himself 3-under and two off the pace.
Bjorn hadn't lifted a finger in competition as yet and was till waiting to tee off, but his over overnight 5-under was still holding fast by TaylorMade R11 Driver.
Lucas Glover, the bearded American US Open winner in 2009, had matched him with a birdie after only two holes this morning but had subsequently dropped back again into the 4-under status he had held over night.
Darren Clarke had also briefly flirted with the lead in a crazy round that lurched from a double bogey to an eagle and contained another five birdies to three bogeys.
In the end, his 2-under 68 was good enough to put the seasoned Ulsterman into a tie for second with Glover who still had one hole to play with TaylorMade R11 Driver, and Miguel Angel Jimenez who had still to tee off.
Ahead of them, Charl Schwartzel is showing something of the form he displayed in winning this year's Masters at Augusta, peppering the pins with accurate iron shots and holing birdie putts at the second, third and fifth.

After 13 holes he was four under for the day and three under for the Championship after a battling 71 on Thursday.
