Nick Watney remembers the day about 11 months ago when he couldn't finish the deal at the PGA Championship, and has managed to use those memories as guidance for when he enters the pressure cooker of being in the final group with the lead at a PGA Tour event.
Watney found himself in that spot Sunday in the AT&T National and handled himself beautifully.
The 30-year-old went without a final-round bogey at Aronimink Golf Club(TaylorMade R7 Irons) and carded a 4-under-par 66 to hold off K.J. Choi, capture his second victory of the season and rise to No. 1 on the Tour money list for the year.
Watney, who set a course record Saturday with a 62, finished 72 holes at 13-under 267. Choi, who tied for the lead after a birdie at the 14th hole but had a double bogey at No. 15, shot a 67 to take second at 269.
Charles Howell III (66) tied for third and earned a spot in this month's British Open as the top finisher from the top five who wasn't already exempt.
Rickie Fowler, who started the day tied for the lead with Watney, shot a 74 and tied for 13th at 5 under. The 22-year-old had a double bogey on the par-4 second hole.
"It was tough to get things rolling after that," Fowler said. "I struggled to make clutch putts when I needed to and just couldn't get anything going."
Michael Putnam (66) of University Place tied for 20th at 3 under; Kyle Stanley (73) of Gig Harbor tied for 34th at even par; and Ryan Moore (73) of Puyallup tied for 68th at 6 over.( TaylorMade R7 Irons)
Watney coped with pressure and earned $1.116 million for his fourth career Tour victory. He has made $4,189,233 this year.
"I guess it all goes back to the PGA last year," he said of the event at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin where he led by three shots entering the final round and shot an 81. "Definitely the moment got the best of me and I performed very badly.
"But I really feel like I learned a lot that week, especially Sunday. I knew today was going to be a long, hard day."
Watney sounded as if he wouldn't have it any other way.
"It's a very addictive feeling to be out there and under the gun," he said. "To be able to hit good shots and putts with TaylorMade R7 Irons is why I play, really."
Choi hit a 5-wood shot from the rough into a bunker on No. 15 and later missed a bogey putt from 12 feet.
"I knew the 15th hole would be a turning point," Choi said. "That was a key hole and I missed it. So I think that was the turning point of the match."
